On Oxytocin and Trust

May 8th, 2012

Trust is fundamental to how we as humans live our lives. It is the basis of our moralities and modern economy. For years scientists have found it hard to understand trust, where does it come from? What causes it? What is even more interesting is that this trust which takes an extremely long amount of time to build up can be destroyed in an instant. The minute someone you trust does something to break it, it is immediately lost and your suspicions of that person are raised until you gradually come to trust them again.

Introduce Oxytocin, oxytocin is a hormone found naturally in the human body and through recent research scientists believe it may play a huge role in trust. The hormone is thought to be responsible for bonding between a mother and child at childbirth. Is released in huge quantities during lovemaking and now scientists believe it may also act as a lubricator to getting people to bond and trust you. As of these news being made public many companies have rushed to get a product onto the shelves as quickly as possible, the two major ones are oxytocin factor and liquid trust.

These products are marketed at people with social difficulties or people trying to get ahead in business or dating. Due to the actions of oxytocin it is plain to see why appearing more approachable and trustworthy are advantageous in these situations.

People with extreme shyness or social phobia benefit hugely from using oxytocin, not only does it boost their confidence for talking with strangers but due to the peripheral actions of oxytocin the response is likely to be more positive than the person is used to. This confidence boost helps people overcome their difficulties and in time they can stop using the oxytocin and the effects will continue.

Scientists Create Oxytocin Trust Sprays

A hormone known as oxytocin may be the reason behind trust, persuasion, sales techniques and love.

One experiment that was carried out recently exposed its participants to the hormone Oxytocin, what it found was that the people who had been given the hormone where found to be 45% more trusting than those who had not been given the hormone.

Oxytocin is a hormone that is produced naturally in the human brain, although it is not unique to humans and can be found in many mammalian species. In humans it plays a huge part in our social lives affecting things like: Emotions, trustworthiness, openness and some studies even go as far as quoting desirability as one of its traits. It acts on parts of the brain that are associated with these situations, for instance it is find in incredibly high levels at childbirth. Experts have theorized that it is largely responsible for the initial bonding between mother and child. We all know how powerful a bond this is and if we could come to control this type of behavior well you don’t need me to tell you the possibilities.

Possible real word usage of Oxytocin

Medical Uses:

Oxytocin could have far reaching uses in the medical world to treat many forms of disorders and conditions. Because oxytcin helps to break down the social barrier and make people more communicative and open it is speculated it could be useful for treating people with autism and asperger syndrome. People suffering with these conditions have a constant fear and unwillingness to communicate and interact with other people around them. The way oxytocin works in people could help people suffering with these conditions and others such as Social Phobia and Social Anxiety to overcome the problems that they find so detrimental to them getting ahead in their everyday lives. With regard to medicine all new discoveries take time to study and develop and it may be many years yet before treatments containing oxytocin are available to the public. Political Uses:

This area of oxytocin use is one that has not been very widely spoken about in public, this is largely due to the fact that there would be uproar if it was ever found out to exist. Bearing in mind the effects of oxytocin as outlined above many people in politics or other positions of power can clearly see the benefit of having people trust and like them more. So far no confirmed cases of this have been brought to light but that is also due to the reason that elevated levels of oxytocin in the atmosphere are imperceptible to the human senses and need specialized equipment to detect. A high density of oxytocin at a political rally or debate could help a candidate persuade people why his point is valid and due to the trusting nature of the people experiencing the oxytocin they would leave with a very high regard for whoever was speaking. Sales and Business Professionals:

If you are involved with sales for your job you know everything counts on one thing: RESULTS! Well many people in sales/marketing and high up positions in corporate structures are using oxytocin to help give them that edge in meetings, seminars and other situations where interaction with clients are potential customers are involved. Somebody who trusts you is likely to be someone that will buy something from you. Oxytocin though is solely for those high up in the chain of command it can also be used for people just getting their foot in the door. In the lower levels of corporate structures their is fierce competition for promotions and job positions with better salaries. New employees want their superiors to like them more than they do their coworkers and oxytocin is one way they an help themselves achieve this.

Oxytocin and Romance:

Oxytocin has a huge connection with romance and social interaction, this is perhaps one of the least discussed but most used factors of oxytocin. People use oxytocin with regard to love and romance for numerous reasons:

  • To help get by difficult times in a relationship where perhaps the couple is not communicating as well as they once had.
  • To help rekindle a past time where the they had a better relationship and cared about one another perhaps more than they do in the current situation.
  • Singles who are looking for romance or going on a first date are using oxytocin as a social lubricant to help their date be more open accepting of them

The verdict on whether using oxytocin in these situations is ethical is still out at the moment but people across the country are doing just this to help them get what they need and using the power of modern day science to help facilitate it.

One thing is for sure though; Oxytocin is here to stay and whether it gets relegated to the medical world and unavailable for public use or it becomes an everyday part of our lives like nice clothes and perfumes only time can tell.
