Too Much Trust from Oxytocin?

In the original study of the effects of Oxytocin, written up in a 2005 version of Nature magazine, groups of men were given poker chips and paired off. One man was the investor and the other guy was the broker. The investor had to decide how many chips he was willing to give his broker.

Half of the “investors” were given a sniff of spray Oxytocin before the exercise began. The other half were given a sniff of a placebo.

Those who had the dose of Oxytocin demonstrated quite a bit more trust in their broker during the game. The Oxytocin investors gave up either the majority or all of their tokens. Half of the investors gave the brokers – who were complete strangers – all of their tokens as a sign of trust. Almost all of the investors gave up the majority of their tokens.

Of those who didn’t have the Oxytocin, or the control group, only one fifth of the investors were willing to give up all of their tokens and only a third give up the majority. Almost half kept all of their tokens or gave up only a minority for “investing”, demonstrating perhaps a rational concern about investing with a stranger – or at least a rational concern for those of us who have a hard time trusting others with our money.

Playing it Safe with Oxytocin

There are tremendous benefits to using Oxytocin, and they aren’t all reserved for politicians. Oxytocin plays a huge part in making people interact and generally engage in social actions. In animals such as primates it has been attributed as one of the major causes of choosing a specific life long mate. Oxytocin is released natuyrally by the brain in huge amounts during sexual orgasm, breastfeeding and situations where one feels they are bonding with another.

Another interesting observation on oxytocin was found during clinical tests. Subjects were given an oxytocin nasal spray and their levels of generosity, forgiveness and trust accepting behavior where all dramatically increased. The subjects given this  oxytocin spray also socialized much more than those test subjects not given the spray.

Oxytocin research in humans is a fairly recent topic, previous tests carried out on this subject has been largely based on animals. But recently the actions of oxytocin in the human brain has been the object of study. Low levels of oxytocin have been associated with many conditions in people ranging from shyness and anxiety to autism.

In an early 2006 study, Doctor Eric Hollander of Mount Sinai school of medicine in New York administered doses of Oxytocin to several autistic adults. He then cross examined the data with these patients and patients that where not given oxytocin. The results were quite outstanding although not too surprising. The patients given the oxytocin spray were better able to recognize facial expressions, emotions and different tones of voice used in conversation. These results were also long lasted and remained for several weeks in some patients. Oxytocin also has no known negative side effects when been administered in this way.

Studies have also been performed on subjects not suffering with autism. Paul Zak is another researcher from California who found that oxytocin sprays administered to strangers in a controlled test made them more open and communicative and less wary of other unknown people participating in the experiment. The subjects were not told beforehand of the effects of the nasal spray so a placebo effect can be withdrawn from being considered in these results.

Recently Oxytocin has become available from many commercial vendors on the internet and in stores. These oxytocin nasal sprays are marketed along similar lines to pheromone colognes although they are mainly odorless products. These companies are marketing their products towards singles and salesmen hoping to make more sales conversions.

Oxytocin is currently not classifed as a controlled substance so can be freely bought by anyone willing to experiment. Results of using these sprays have mixed results with some people claiming it has helped them hugely while others noted minimal effects. Now, lets take the same situation but include a huge increase in the amount of trust your boss may have for you. His attitude this time will clearly be different. Instead of being skeptical of your intentions your boss will notice the benefit and wisdom in them. He will no longer think you are being solely self motivated but will think your ideas will benefit you, the company and most importantly he’ll be able to see the benefit for himself.

As an employee in a business you are at the end of the corporate standing. You are the person who does the hard work and you are the person who has to deal with the backlash when things go wrong. If you want to climb the corporate ladder the most important attributes you can have are respect and trust. Now I am not saying oxytocin alone can get you this but if you know you have what it takes oxytocin can be used merely as another aid in helping you achieve what you deserve.
